Llamas and alpacas belong to the New World camelid species. Their home is the South American Andes. They still live there in the wild with their ancestors, the vicuñas and guanacos. The alpaca fiber is silky and shiny and much softer than sheep's wool.
Suri alpacas have a fascinating fleece with a shiny curly structure, as shiny as silk. The fiber grows parallel to the body and hangs down in long, individual braids.
The Suri is slightly smaller than the Huacaya and only makes up about 10% of the world population. While the Huacaya alpacas are strong and robust animals, the Suris are rather slim and delicate.
